Throwbacks

Overview

This summer, students will independently engage literature, music, and recipes that raise their consciousness and ask them to question their relationship with the world.

Students will consider their developing relationship with communities and the world around them through reading two novels and engaging with assigned essential questions. Students will consider how communities form and will consider how relationships and responsibilities grow out of those groups.

Essays will be due to mccarron@school.la on August 19. 

Read

Students will write a 400 word essay that engages with the essential questions for the divisional and grade-level novels. Students will write about both books in their response.

All Middle School Read:

  • Lord of the Flies – William Golding

  • Essential Question: How do we build community?

Rising Grade Six

  • The Giver – Lois Lowry

  • Essential Question: How do we belong to a community?

Rising Grade Seven

  • Little Women – Louisa May Alcott

  • Essential Question: How does family frame our connection to ourselves and our community?

Rising Grade Eight

  • The Hobbit – J.R.R. Tolkien

  • Essential Question: What are our responsibilities to the world?


All Upper School Read:

Students will write a 1,000 word essay engaging with the essential questions for the divisional and grade-level novel. Students will write about both books in their response.

Rising Grade Nine

  • Frankenstein – Mary Shelley

  • Essential Question: What responsibilities do I have to my creations?

Rising Grade Ten

Rising Grade Eleven

  • Sula – Toni Morrison

  • Essential Question: What responsibilities do I have to my culture?

Rising Grade Twelve

  • Love in the Time of Cholera – Gabriel Garcia Marquez

  • Essential Question: What responsibilities do I have to the past?

Descripción general
