New Look,
Same Great Flavor…

After months of work behind the scenes, we’re excited to roll out ESLA’s first ever comprehensive visual identity—an updated crest, new wordmarks, our first ever school logo, and much more. This is a game-changer for ESLA’s overall look, feel, and identity. We’re grateful for all the volunteer support, feedback, and inspiration we’ve received. So, without further delay, let’s take a tour through ESLA’s new look.

The
Crest

From the Concrete to the Crest…

The shield that anchors ESLA’s official crest is taken directly from the architectural features that adorn the main entrance of the School’s East Campus, lovingly referred to as “the Schoolhouse”—the building that served as our first permanent home during our first year of operation nearly a decade ago.

The rays across the top semi-circle represent, of course, the sunset over the Hollywood Hills, and each quadrant of the shield represents a different aspect of our community. Let’s break it down:

Top Left: Our Episcopal Identity

The top left quadrant of the shield, and the shield as a whole, references the official logo of the Episcopal Church, which you can learn more about here. The cross of St. Andrew, which is made up of nine cross-lets or mini crosses, represents the nine dioceses that met in Philadelphia in 1789 to form the Protestant Episcopal Church of the USA.

Top Right: The ESLA community

The top right quadrant of the shield is a direct reference to the top right quadrant of the shield on the facade of the Schoolhouse—three simple diagonal lines that point upward, moving from left to right. This quadrant connects us to our (very literal) foundations, and the diagonal lines represent our continual growth from our humble beginnings.

bottom left: Our students & our school spirit

The coyote. Wise, playful, cunning, scrappy, and maybe even a little mischievous. Patron saint of the Hollywood Hills and the perfect embodiment of our school spirit. Go Coyotes!

Bottom right: Our Dedication to study

“A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic,” said Carl Sagan. The coyote gazes across the crest toward an open book, representing our academic life and the dedication to study that undergirds everything we do at ESLA.

X Marks the Logo…

The logomark is a simple, striking iteration of the interior shield from the crest. Its simplicity makes it incredibly versatile across a wide array of use cases, at any size and in any setting. From a lapel pin to a page break, a t-shirt to a wall mural, the possibilities are endless.

Variations on the Theme…

The logomark also lends itself to simple variations that open up even more design possibilities:

Wordmark

Putting It All Together…

The official school wordmark incorporates both the logomark and the text from the outer circle of the crest. Clean. Simple. It works well across the horizontal plane and stacks perfectly for vertical use cases. Letterhead, envelopes, email signatures, signage—the wordmark says it all.

 The
Logotype

Embrace the Acronym…

Of course, all the cool kids know we go by ESLA. (Officially, we pronounce each letter—ee es el ay—but the even deeper cut is to simply pronounce it es-luh.) We knew we needed a simple, clean lockup of that acronym—something a little less buttoned up, a little sharper than the formal serifed font of the crest, but not too far afield. Thus, the logotype:

Sleek, action-oriented. The italic gives it some nice forward momentum, and the combination of hard and rounded edges preserves just enough formality. Perfect for athletics and other clubs and activities. The logotype can also easily be paired with or even incorporated into the logomark, opening up plenty of possibilities:

Keep Your Eyes Peeled…

The complete visual identity includes more than what we’ve previewed here, and we look forward to putting these new designs into practice. Keep an eye out for ESLA’s new look as we begin to roll it out through the rest of the school year!
