A Message from Dr. Rodgers
Dr. Kenneth Rodgers, Jr.
President and Head of School
Dear SLA community,
As wildfires continue to spread across multiple areas in Los Angeles, stoked by uncommonly powerful wind patterns, we send our prayers up for all the students and families across the city who have lost their homes, been displaced, or are living or working outside under these horrible conditions. Members of our own community—both students and staff—number among those who have been forced to evacuate. We will share further information as we are able, but for now, please keep them in your thoughts. During this crisis, I hope there are opportunities for all of us to be good to our neighbors, to share in acts of caring and mutual aid.
Anyone who has been evacuated or is currently suffering through any kind of hardship due to the fires, please do not hesitate to reach out to Charles Watterson at watterson@school.la, or to any SLA administrator. The California Association of Independent Schools is coordinating support for displaced families in our peer institutions. If you are able and willing to house families temporarily, please contact Mr. Watterson.
We will be returning to school tomorrow and resuming our normal schedule; please remember that tomorrow is a late start, 9:30 a.m. All after-school programming and sports competitions are canceled for the remainder of the week.
We look forward to reconvening with our students after a long break and during this difficult moment. As always, the health and wellbeing of our community is our top priority. Air quality is a very serious concern right now, and we will continue monitoring conditions. We encourage every member of our community to remain indoors as much as possible at this time. On campus, we will restrict outdoor activities; lunch and gym classes will be held indoors, and, per city advisories, we encourage students to bring face masks to wear during the brief moments they may be outdoors.
My sincere best wishes to everyone,
Dr. Kenneth Rodgers, Jr.
