Respecto a los eventos de hoy en el Capitolio.

Estimada comunidad de ESLA,

A estas alturas, casi todo el mundo se ha enterado de que el Capitolio de EE. UU. Está cerrado después de ser asaltado por partidarios de Trump.

Kenneth, Nicoli, Megan, Will y yo nos hemos mantenido en comunicación mientras se desarrollaban estos acontecimientos profundamente inquietantes. A primera hora de la tarde, la situación parece relativamente contenida y hemos decidido continuar con las clases y actividades escolares esta tarde.

Estaremos monitoreando los eventos a medida que avancen el día y la noche, y escribiremos con mayor detenimiento y atención en los próximos días. Mientras tanto, sepa que denunciamos la ideología fascista supremacista blanca que parece haber animado estos eventos. Es imposible no comparar la respuesta a los eventos de hoy, llevados a cabo por una multitud abrumadoramente blanca, con las respuestas a las manifestaciones y levantamientos por las vidas negras a lo largo de 2020, y notar sus marcadas diferencias.

Esperamos sinceramente que la situación continúe disminuyendo y, en ausencia de noticias que empeoren, planeamos tener un horario escolar regular mañana. Durante estos tiempos aterradores y aislados, esperamos que continuar reunidos como comunidad brinde apoyo y estabilidad a nuestros estudiantes, y los alentamos a hacer preguntas y hablar sobre los eventos de hoy. Por favor sepa que nuestros capellanes están listos para responder a sus preguntas y brindar apoyo, al igual que los maestros y asesores.

Regarding Today’s Events at the Capitol.

Dear ESLA community,

By now, most everyone has learned that the US Capitol is under lockdown after being stormed by Trump supporters.

Kenneth, Nicoli, Megan, Will, and I have remained in communication as these profoundly unsettling events have unfolded. As of early afternoon, the situation appears relatively contained, and we have decided that we should carry on with classes and school activities this afternoon.

We will be monitoring events as the day and evening proceed, and we will write more thoroughly and thoughtfully in the coming days. In the meantime, know that we denounce the fascist, white supremacist ideology that seems to have animated these events. It is impossible not to compare the response to today’s events, carried out by an overwhelmingly white crowd, to the responses to protests and uprisings for Black lives throughout 2020—and to note their stark differences.

We sincerely hope that the situation continues to de-escalate, and, in the absence of worsening news, we plan to have a regular school schedule tomorrow. During these frightening and isolating times, we hope that continuing to convene as a community will provide support and stability for our students, and we encourage students to ask questions and talk about today’s events. Please know that our chaplains are ready to field questions and provide support—as are teachers and advisors.

We hope our Capitol finds peace in the days ahead.
